✨️My First Novel by Akwaeke, A MUST-READ!! Gut-Wrenching, Heart-Rending!✨️
I just finished this in the last twenty minutes, and I want to get my thoughts down before I run out of words, but I can tell you this is a 5, maybe 6⭐️ read. The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi is an LGBTQIA Novel about a Queer/trans boy raised in Nigeria, but also about his family and the Niger-Wives community he was raised in. Y'all, I'm shook. I finished half of it last night, and it took me another two days to finish it. It answers questions about my own Community, but at the same time gives me so many more about the families we're raised in. Craziness, I tell you. Flat out amazing, and Akwaeke wrote this when she was only twenty and she was raised in the same community in Nigeria as a Queer/Trans child.
There is so much more that we learn about Vivek prior to his death, and after his death. The children come together after his death and decide whether or not they're going to tell his Mama, Kavita, what they knew that Vivek was living like because Kavita is worrying herself to death wondering where his silver Ganesh pendent had gone of to, she knew he would never take it off, not even in death, so she assumed someone must have stolen it from him. And to be honest, that's the part that I've been paying attention to this whole time. So much so, that it almost slipped past me when the girls and Osita handed me the pictures, the one picture of her - our daughter , Nnamdi dressed in a tight dress, make up done, hair in corn rows. I almost missed her, but I knew her on site.
It's so sad, Nnamdi wasn't murdered, she wasn't killed because she was Trans, but it was all covered up because she was Trans. Osita knew there was nothing he could do, he slipped off her pretty dress and left her at her parents home and she became Vivek again and that in itself is heartbreaking. That there is so much ignorance and heartbreak in Nigeria that rather than learn about Nnamdi's other life, Osita had to leave her there and pretend like something awful had happened to her.
This is one of the most beautifully heartbreaking books I've read in in years, I would give anything to read it over again from the very beginning. There are no real words to describe its beauty.
TW: Check with the Author as the majority i dont consider these triggers, but may hurt your heart a little.
