✨️ GORGEOUS with A Redemption Arc like None Other!!✨️

‘Being brave doesn't mean not being scared. It means doing what you need to even when you're terrified.’ - this really says it all for both main characters throughout the book, that even while terrified they kept moving at least one step forward.

Duplicity really does wear the reader down, in that I had a hard time at the beginning with Athena saying a firm "NO" to Marlowe becoming a Seraphim, and even after that warning Brendan to pretty much treat her like glass, that she's special.

Throughout all that Brendan has points where he was SO GOOD, the lush massage cream he puts on her knees the morning of her first day at work and points when he was SO BAD (seriously I wanted to drop a large rock on his head) when he left her bent over his desk and told her to get on with it.

At that point he knows Marlowe has a high praise ki*k and nothing like a degradation ki*k. No shame to those that enjoy that, but Marlowe's already struggling with feeling oily and cheap with what she's having to do, and then he plays that up by leaving her there.

Elodie then shows her brilliance by flipping the script by not having Brendan get mad when he figures out he's been tricked, I don't know a man in my life that wouldn't have been hurt and angry. It was such a relief to have Bren realize the disgusting nature of what he's been doing to Marlowe, and precisely what he must do to win her back. He could throw his money around and back her into a corner too fast, but it's highly likely Marlowe would reject that.

The shower scene in Duke University was absolutely blessed, I loved his kindness, gentleness, and I can't wait for y'all to read about his and Athena's entire time there. It's eye opening, that it does take quiet and good food and rest to heal, and how many people do not have that option on an open ward.

There are more twists and turns as we near the end that are foreseeable, but nothing TOO easy. There's a lovely animal friend, and I think all books do well with an animal friend, but especially in this case he helps to settle Marlowe and also helps Brendan see that Marlowe's an inherently good person.

Duplicity is worth five stars every time, for Marlowe's acting that nothing is wrong, and Brendan's perfection in groveling. The chronic illness rep, as a person who struggles to both be seen as ill, but not worthless to society, Elodie did a FANTASTIC job and her sensitivity readers were on point!! Elodie's writing in every book of hers I've read is golden, her attention to detail is beautiful, and I always look forward to the next book. I cannot WAIT to listen to Duplicity in Audio!
