🥬 Wonderful Read With All The Emotions!!🥬
Marvina and Rose are two sisters who have been separated by grief and anger, and horrible emotional abuse on their Mama's side (but she was probably doing the best she could at the time.) The sisters are in their late 50's now, and Marvina prepares chicken dinners with their Mama's spice mix that she passed down and Rose just retired from the Postal Service.
Both ladies have health issues that are getting worse as they get older, but Rose wants to open a restaurant and she's going to use that same spice mix. The problem is she seems to have forgotten all the ingredients as time has gone by, so she packs up to go see her sister. The bigger problem is she's already on her way when she calls and Marvina ignores the call, so when she listens to the voicemail she's even more upset that she just headed that way without asking if she could come first - But if Marvina had answered the call...
When Rose gets there she's hurting so badly she doesn't have it in her to talk to her about opening the restaurant, she just has to lay down, which just irritates Marvina even more, that she shows up and goes straight to bed with no communication. The next morning is Sunday, and unbeknownst to Rose the Pastor has told Marvina she can't do her chicken dinners there any more because they've got to become more with the times. So when they get to church and they've moved her to a different pew - gasp!! The horror! Marvina is even more hurt and angry, and she blames it on Rose for them being late, etc. When they get home Marvina's done, she'll make Rose some chicken with the special spices but then Rose has to go home!
As the sisters are arguing about whether Rose is going home, Rose sees someone in Marvinas pool house! After they both go to check on that, and Rose is right they decide to call the police and these ladies lives just gets even more wild from there!
Marvina and Rose learn the value of communication, but is it way too late? Will they ever forgive each other for mistakes made when they were literally children? Y'all this book changed the way I think about hearing people out, and definitely giving people the benefit of the doubt and not assuming the first bad thing that comes to my mind.
This is a beautiful book of sisterhood, forgiveness, and communication. The disability representation is spot on throughout the book, and the surprise I've left for you teaches both women that not everything is right there in black and white. Sometimes you have to search through the grey.
*Trigger Warning: There is discussion of past child abuse on the page and discussion of miscarriage at various stages on the page. Please take care of yourself.
