๐Ÿ’—Avery Maxwell knows how to write a couple I would read FOREVER!!๐Ÿ’—

"Life is a series of kicks to the heart, and if it misses you the first time, it’ll always get you on the backswing."

Dillon and Penny might be my favorite characters so far this year. Avery Maxwell wrote a Romance novel that combines a couples first real love with the fact that both of them lived with abuse for so long they almost see it as a comfortable cloak that hides them from the rest of the real world.

Dillon wants so badly to spend real time with Penny, but he's hiding out in Lochlan's Security company Envision, and like a baby bird has to be pushed out of the nest and firmly into Penny's path so she can't avoid him anymore. Even then he finds it frustrating that his friends, and people he's never met before (Remy and Miller), have been preparing for his eventual arrival in Chance Lake rather than look at it for what it is - an absolute gift horse designed to win whatever race they throw it in.

When Dillon finally starts trying to talk Penny in to seriously considering him, every step forward includes three steps back. The very first scene in the book where they can dance, "sweaty Eddy" gets into it with a coach on the sidelines of a game and when Kai tries to help he gets hurt and Penny gets called away.

The words though that Avery uses to build Penny up? Y'all, my heart bleeds for her, but I don't know what I would do for a man like Dillon who uses phrases like these:

"I see a queen who hasn’t yet learned that she holds all the power, and I can’t wait to see you when you finally fix your crown.”

Penny sees herself as the ultimate martyr. She has no choice but to be mother and father to her children, to always put them first, and that 'Mom guilt' is the worst kind of pain. But in always choosing them, she is never choosing herself and Dillon and their family unit is breaking down more and more every day. Her misery and heartbreak is hard to see again for a Mom that lived it once upon a lifetime ago, and made very different choices.

There were points in the book I wanted to yell at Penny to choose herself and Dillon, to not let a slimy drunk use hurtful words over and again when she's proven her worth to be above rubies so many times!! Ms. Maxwell did an AMAZING job with Dillon and Kai, those words over and over as he promised not to leave, not to curse in front of him. They just glued my heart back together.

This book isn't just sad, the Romantic points are beyond beautiful, the smexy times are EPIC (!!), and overall Ms. Maxwell teaches us again that Family is not always about blood. At the end of the day Family is who you choose, and who chooses you back. One of my favorites this year, Your Last First Kiss is why I choose Avery Maxwell's Romance Novels over and over again!
