🌬 Meet Me In The Blue is * Chef's Kiss* Perfection! 🌬
I'm so grateful every time I read one of A M Johnson's novels, especially when they deal with the hard things. I had a friend give me a book a few years ago that insisted that we can do the hard things, and every time I move far enough away to forget that ideal, Amanda Johnson writes a new book guaranteed to remind me that yes, we can, in fact do all the hard things.
Meet Me In The Blue is absolutely gloriously appealing, even with the hard talk of grief throughout the book. Luka and Rook are sublime characters with each of them having so much going for them.
Luka is the kind of character who for me is easy to dislike, at least a little bit, as he left and fled to Los Angeles and stayed there as long as his father would allow him to stay. But it's also easy to recognize why he chose to stay out there, why he felt so trapped in Hemlock Harbor, why he felt so bullied as a young man - with no one really to stand up for him. (Especially when he didn't really tell Rook ALL the different types of bullying that were going on.)
Rook is the kind of character I fell in love with almost immediately. Especially when we're having discussions regarding asexuality and demisexuality, and I know my self how hard it is to wrangle those types of sexuality within oneself as a young person, and then as an adult. His sweet personality, on top of those things, plus his unwillingness to allow his father to run roughshod over his medical practice - I just had a lot of hero worship for him right up front.
Y'all these two young men just have the best relationship together, or start of one together! And I love the little Easter eggs Author AM Johnson dropped throughout the book about Nora, and then Anders and Ethan, it was just the sweetest book. Even when Luka is given the opportunity to run away agin, and Rook is all in for him to have this opportunity - Luka makes the best decision for everyone.
Five out of five stars for this beautiful MM ace/Demi novel, absolutely flawless. There is nothing Author AM Johnson could have done here to improve upon the relationship these two young men are building.
