Stephanie Rose's An Unexpected Turn is a sweet, sexy love story that incorporates a pretty big age gap, a guidance counselor that knows precisely how to draw out the needs of her students, and an alpha contractor busy covering his heart, and that of his damaged son.
Jake is a contractor who finds himself with full time custody of his son (something he's always wanted) after his ex-wife remarries after fourteen years and basically dumps their son on him to follow her new husband across the country.
Mike, his son, has pretty much always wanted to be with Dad (Jake) but didn't want to cause a blow up with his mom, and definitely didn't want to be dumped on his Dad in a new school district with no notice where he knows no one, and he's worried his Dad didn't want him. So like most teens, he's being sullen and closed off - until he meets the school guidance counselor, who offers him an in with the school's Robotics team!!
When Jake finally realizes that the guidance counselor, Peyton, is his best friends little sister, he drops her like a hot rock! Peyton on the other hand is still pretty much full speed ahead, until she realizes Jake's recognized her and then that is THAT!
Neither Peyton nor Jake want to risk disappointing her Uncle Keith, the town Police Chief. But every time they're alone together they can feel the emotions and the sexual tension drawing them closer, and there is no resisting it!!
Stephanie Rose writes an excellent book with themes of angst, and sadness from both Jake and Peytons prior lives, even throwing some from Keith and Mayas life in there, and showing Maya's ability and desire to act as Peytons Aunt in every way. She shows her she's not disappointed in her behavior, simply that it took her so long to reach out.
I love the many images of found family cherished throughout An Unexpected Turn, any time Peyton, Mike or Jake needed someone to turn to, there was always someone to lift them up and show them a new way to go.
There were so many positive aspects in this book, even Peyton and Keith's mother realized where she was going wrong and changed her tune. It makes me wish for a second book for what should be a standalone - maybe Peyton's friend Claudia could find her forever love?!? Just a little suggestion!! An Unexpected Turn is absolutely a 5 ⭐ treat, I can't WAIT for Stephanie Rose's next one!!
